Unclear? Really??
Umm... Can I take a shot at it Mr CNN Article-Writer-Person? I am going to go out on a limb here and say that the huge predatory creature was sick of these little peons trying to make him skate on ice (a feat hard for humans) and thousands of years of instinctive animal rage kicked in and he did what normal bears do- he used his ridiculous strength and his large sharp teeth and his crazy big razor sharp claws and straight up murdered himself some dinner!
But that's just a guess...
